Considerada por alguns como nu metal e por outros como metal alternativo, a banda possui um som único que impossibilita uma categorização simples. A banda nasceu na cidade de Los Angeles, Califórnia e é formada por Serj Tankian (vocais, teclados), John Dolmayan (bateria), Daron Malakian (guitarra, vocais) e Shavo Odadjian (baixo). Eles são conhecidos pelas visões políticas e sociais que aparecem nas letras de suas canções, o estilo diferente de roupas e as barbichas. Todos os quatro membros são descendentes de armênios.
